Dunk O Meter

Brought to you by the Orlando Magic Dance Team

One of the most irrelevant stats in sports the Dunk O Meter shows us some pretty thought provoking numbers. No, not really. But the players that top the list are worth some conversation.

As of tonight Nene Hilario leads the league with 48 dunks. Followed by Dwight Howard(47) and Amare Stoudemire(45). No surprise there, as far as Howard and Stoudemire goes. Both are preimere interior players who have topped this list for the past 3 seasons. Stoudemire doing it with the help of some set pick and rolls, and the longest arms I have ever seen. Howard gets his, despite not having a good point guard, with shifty low post moves and fierce offensive rebounding. Did I mention the Magic need a point guard?

Nene, however, is not considered a focal point of his offense. He seems to just be at the right place at the right time for garbage points and bailout passes that lead to dunks. He is averaging 15 points per game.

Another interesting story on the list are were Laker players rank. Andrew Bynum 5th, Pau Gasol 11th, Trevor Ariza 15th. Kobe Bryant? 29th. You can chalk this up to less minutes played(34 mpg), his mind being set on defense, and no major need for him to take over games.

Surprises in the top 25? Ronnie Brewer(8th), David Lee(9th), Joel Przybilla(19th), JaVale McGee(21st), and Paul Millsap(22nd)

Surprisingly not in the top 25? Al Jefferson, Andris Biedrins, Gerald Wallace, and Vince Carter

lol @ brewer and millsap being surprises . . . only a surprise if your concept of how the jazz play is rooted in the days of when hornacek and stockton had the shortest backcourt shorts in the league.silly . . . watch a jazz game sometime. they dunk a lot more than you'd expect.
